PPTP, VPN, WRT54Gv2, Repeater mode/ SSID
QN:
--> How to wirelessly connect a wireless router to my wireless router modem, while displaying under another different SSID? More specifically, can the wireless router with the custom firmware do different SSID broadcast and also as a wireless "bridge" to my main wireless router modem for internet access?
--> Does anyone who has done a similar setup gotten faster speed on the VPN??
Slow to the point I'm not even sure if I'm connected to the internet or the VPN service. I tried to ping google.com and I'm only getting timeouts. Its saying on my DD-WRT WAN status page that I'm connected. Now this part is also getting confusing.
Background:
Just got a VPN service for watching Netflix. Problem is I wanted to watch Netflix over at my room telly using Logitech Revue. I can always use the wireless router (just bought 2nd hand) wifi but the signal is dismal as its a few rooms down the hallway. Also, I was hoping that if this can be done, I can put the router midway in the lounge room and provide wired VPN access to the lounge telly (just need to get another Revue or DLink Boxee).
Equipments:
Main wireless router modem: Belkin Playmax N600 HD (F7D4401au).
Wireless router: Linksys WRT54G v2 (flashed with DD-WRT v24 sp2 micro VINT)
VPN Connection Type: PPTP
VPN Server: Witopia LAX PPTP Server
Sidenotes:
- Just flashed the WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware (success)
- Managed to connect to the LAX server, but its slooooooowwwwwwww =(
Disclaimer:
Apology if this has been covered elsewhere. All I can find are lots of technical terms like AP, Bridge etc. It might have already been covered elsewhere but all I'm after is a really simple noobish explaination thread. Most of the steps I've done to flash the WRT54G and also putting in the PPTP settings are covered in other websites on a step by step method for beginners like myself.
Last but not least, a big thanks for replying!
What is a VPN?
VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) were first used by companies to enable their employees to securely access internal systems such as email remotely (e.g. from home or while on business trips). Today they are increasingly being used for personal use by individuals to protect their privacy while online in public places (e.g. when using the wi-fi connection in a cafe) or in a country where the internet is censored / blocked (e.g. China, Saudi Arabia).
Why do I need a VPN?
Whether youre an expat living in a foreign country where the internet is heavily regulated, a mobile user constantly on the road, or just someone concerned with maintaining their privacy online, having aVPNis becoming essential.
